What is Section 504 and what activities does it encompass?
Section 504 provides appropriate educational services to disabled students. A plan is designed, by a committee, to meet the individual needs of the student to assist them to the same extent as the average student that does not have a disability.
The substantially limiting area in which a student may qualify for this program are related to major life activities, but are not limited to: caring for oneself, performing manual tasks, seeing, hearing, normal cell growth, eating, sleeping, walking, standing, lifting, bending, speaking, breathing, learning, reading, concentrating, thinking, communicating, working, and reproductive, immune system, bowel, bladder, neurological, endocrine, respiratory, circulatory, brain, digestive functions.
Within most school districts, one of the main areas addressed by Section 504 is that of dyslexia.
BISD's dyslexia curriculum is a scientifically based multi-sensory program which is used to improve the reading skills of students with dyslexia and/or dyslexia type characteristics through goal specific and comprehensive remediation.
Skills that will be focused on include, but are not limited to are: letter identification, word identification, word attack, word comprehension, passage comprehension, listening comprehension, oral reading fluency, phonological awareness, rapid auto naming, spelling, reading and writing.
